THE CITY

Located just southwest of Birmingham, the historic town of Fairfield was established as a planned company town by U.S. Steel and still holds on to its industrial roots. Hanna Steel Corporation built a manufacturing facility in 1983, and Fairfield Works remains in operation, producing raw steel and manufacturing tubular steel products, and it is one of the largest remaining steel operations in the South.

With that said, Fairfield has become an underserved community, although much work is being done to revitalize the area. Through the efforts of community programs and ministries, the community is beginning to see sparks of family restoration, workforce development, and higher learning achievements. Fairfield is home to Miles College, an HBCU, as well as Miles Law School.

The vision of our partnering church, Urban Hope Community Church, as well as our own is to see Fairfield and its residents strengthened by Biblical family values, authentic cross-cultural relationships, development of talents and abilities, and the pursuit of Biblical, Christ-centered justice by “remembering the poor”
